The English wine industry faces the challenges of Brexit

The School of Wine & Spirits Business (SWSB) at the Burgundy School of Business (BSB) in Dijon recently welcomed guest speaker James Davis MW for a conference with over 100 students. The topic of the conference was “the impact of Brexit on the British wine industry”. James Davis holds a Master of Wine, a prestigious degree from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, and is specialised in the wine industry. Up until recently, he was Head of Buying for Tesco's Wine Buying Team, the multi-billion grocery retailer in the UK.

It was a real pleasure to come to Dijon and discuss with the staff and students of the SWSB. As the consequences of Brexit start to manifest themselves, there are some interesting opportunities in store for the British wine industry but the industry is also facing some serious challenges”, James said. “The British wine industry is mature, complex and exciting, and is experiencing significant growth in the sparkling wine sector. In the post-Brexit landscape, the exchange rates are under significant pressure, and so the import prices of wine are rising. Alcohol taxation is also high, and wine distributors are facing ferocious competition due to the increased presence of discounters like Aldi.
