Understanding employee dishonesty behaviors in the workplace

Call for papers

  • Employee dishonesty and relevant behaviours in the workplace have drawn academic and medias’ attention recently. Researchers and empirical studies reveal that employees may engage with dishonest conducts (e.g., lying, cheating) in order to gain unlawful benefits (Herrman, 2005; Hitsch et al., in press). At the corporate level, employee dishonesty has accounted for $600 billion annual loss in the US and relevant tax evasion leads to $353 billions government loss (Mazar et al., 2008). It becomes evident that employee dishonesty behaviors have generated salient reputation damage as well as monetary costs to employers, organisations and local government. Hence, understanding the mechanism of employee dishonesty to develop intervention strategies becomes an urgent issue.
  • The workshop will be an opportunity to construct multiple bridges between different ways of understanding employee dishonesty and of doing, communicating and publishing relevant research. This workshop aims at gathering researchers from different disciplines around a common topic in order to foster discussion and scientific collaboration. Key research themes may include, for instance, what psychological, social or cognitive mechanisms may exist and/or operate underlying dishonest behaviours? How individual motivators and organisational characteristics may help explain dishonest behaviours? And, how can organizational managers and HR practitioners tackle with employee dishonesty more proactively?
  • The workshop warmly welcomes researchers from various disciplines and backgrounds to discuss employee dishonesty, issues and further implications in the workplace. Research from Economics, Psychology, Marketing or Business is welcome.

Submission and deadlines

Paper submission

  • Short papers should focus on the main ideas of the later full paper, i.e. they should explain the purpose of the paper, theoretical background, the research gap that is addressed, the approach taken, the methods of analysis (in empirical papers), main findings, and contributions.
  • It is also imperative to indicate clearly how the paper links with the general theme of the Workshop, although not all papers need to focus on the general theme. Creativity, innovativeness, theoretical grounding, and critical thinking are all welcome. The short paper should not exceed five A4 pages, including: cover page, main text, references and appendices.

Reviewing process will start after the submission deadline and accepted papers will be informed and invited for presentation before 30th March 2013. 

Workshop Registration

Please keep in mind that you have to register for the conference no later than June 1st, 2013. Registration is now open.
The registration price equals €250 and includes participation to the workshop, administrative forms, coffee breaks (for Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th), lunches (for Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th), and dinner (for Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th) in two restaurants. The fees are detailed below.

Venue and accomodation

  • The workshop will be hosted in Dijon at the Burgundy School of Business School (located in the city centre).
  • For information, Dijon is the capital of Burgundy and is located near Paris (1h30 from Paris by train). There is a daily direct train connection from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Dijon City Centre (otherwise there are plenty of daily direct connections between Paris Gare de Lyon and Dijon city centre). Dijon has a rich cultural heritage: it is one of the best preserved French historic centres with beautiful architecture; is famous for its gastronomy and wines and is surrounded by the famous Burgundy vineyards.
  • Coming from Zurich? Dijon is also well connected to Zurich. There are many daily direct train connections from Zurich to Dijon City Centre (approximately 1h45 by train).
  • Coming from Lyon? There are plenty of direct train connections between Lyon and Dijon each day. The fastest connections (TGV) last about 2h to reach Dijon. 


For accommodation, you will find many hotels located near the Burgundy School of Business. Here are some examples: Kyriad, Ibis Styles, Mercure, Sofitel.
Note that we negotiated a limited number of rooms with a substantial discount for participants of the workshop at the following hotel: Hotel Campanile.
